New Hampshire Rocked by Fatal School Bus Accident

SchoolBusOnRoad

School bus accidents occur far too frequently in New Hampshire and across the entire country. The frequency of these accidents is concerning not only for parents, but also other motorists. A recent crash has caused one fatality while injuring numerous students. How can we prevent these accidents from happening in the future? How can parents pursue compensation alongside an experienced bus accident lawyer in Manchester?

Driver Dies After Crashing Head-On Into School Bus

In November of 2024, NBC News reported that a driver had died after crashing head-on into a school bus in Walpole. Two children were hospitalized in the collision, which occurred just after school ended. Traffic authorities say that the driver crossed the center line on Route 12 before colliding with the school bus, and it is not clear why.

In addition to the two children, the 65-year-old school bus driver was also airlifted to a nearby hospital with presumably serious injuries. The crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information is being urged to come forward.

Common Causes of School Bus Crashes in New Hampshire

School bus crashes have occurred at a worrying pace in New Hampshire over the past few years. In April of 2024, a school bus slammed into the back of an SUV in Nashua – causing one injury to a child. In 2021, a school bus crashed into the trees after its driver suffered a medical emergency. In 2019, 17 kids were injured in another New Hampshire school bus crash.

These accidents are often caused by negligent drivers. A common situation involves a driver who illegally passes a stopped school bus, striking embarking or disembarking students. Drivers may also veer into oncoming traffic, cut off school buses, or engage in other reckless behavior.

That being said, school bus drivers are sometimes to blame for these crashes. Often, school boards hire questionable people to drive these vehicles, including elderly individuals or those with medical issues. There have been cases where school bus drivers have been hired despite substance abuse issues, license suspensions, DUIs, and other concerns.

Can I Sue for a School Bus Crash?

Parents of injured children may be able to sue after school bus crashes. If your child faces expensive medical treatments due to a school bus crash, a lawsuit could help you cover these costs. You may need to prove negligence, which means showing that someone else was to blame for your child’s injuries. This might be a negligent school bus driver, a reckless motorist, or some other party. It may also be possible to sue a school board for negligently hiring a questionable bus driver.
