New Hampshire Plagued by Hit-and-Runs

CarWreck

Over the past few weeks, New Hampshire has seen numerous hit-and-runs. Some of these incidents have caused fatal injuries to innocent people, and they highlight a major safety issue on our roads. People now seem more likely to avoid responsibility for their actions, preferring to slam on their accelerators and escape. Often, these individuals are brought to justice and face serious felonies. What happens if you were struck by a hit-and-run driver in New Hampshire?

New Hampshire National Guard Commander Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver

In July of 2024, a top military commander in New Hampshire was killed by a hit-and-run driver. The commander held the rank of Brigadier General and led the Air National Guard of New Hampshire. The accident occurred in Rochester, and it was caused by an 81-year-old driver behind the wheel of a Toyota Rav4.

According to the police, the commander had pulled over to the side of the road to secure a load on the trailer he was hauling with his Toyota Tundra. While he was standing by his truck, the 81-year-old driver approached, struck him at high speed, and continued driving. When first responders arrived at the scene, they quickly pronounced the commander deceased.

An unidentified juvenile – possibly a family member – was sitting in the commander’s truck when the fatal collision occurred. While police have not announced whether charges will be filed, a hit-and-run is a serious offense in New Hampshire. If a major injury or death occurs, fleeing the scene is a felony. It is likely that this hit-and-run driver will face serious consequences for his actions.

Motorcyclist Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Manchester

Also in July of 2024, a cyclist in Manchester was killed by another hit-and-run driver. The victim was 71 years of age, and he was struck by an unidentified driver operating a Nissan Rogue. Police noted that the driver had veteran plates, and that he did not stop after striking the cyclist. Although first responders were able to arrive at the scene before the victim died, he ultimately succumbed to his wounds after arriving at a nearby hospital.

Anyone with information about this incident is being urged to come forward. Although the police say that the driver has veteran plates, it is not clear whether they captured the actual license plate number. Traffic surveillance footage seems grainy and unclear.
