Adverse Weather Causes Over 100 New Hampshire Crashes in a Single Day

SnowRoad2

Although many drivers in New Hampshire are familiar with driving in the snow, sometimes mother nature can surprise even the most experienced motorists. Hundreds of crashes occurred in a single January day, and they were attributed to wintery conditions. If you were injured in one of these crashes, you may wonder what truly caused your accident. Was it simply an unavoidable collision? Or can you sue a negligent party for causing your injuries? This is a question you may need to ask an experienced injury attorney in New Hampshire.

“Slick and Snow-Covered Roads” to Blame for Over 100 Crashes

In January of 2025, the Newport Dispatch reported that “slick and snow-covered roads” were to blame for over 100 crashes on a single Saturday. These crashes occurred between 6 AM and 4 PM, including one major truck accident on the F.E. Everett Turnpike. Fortunately, as currently reported, none of these accidents resulted in any injuries. However, numerous vehicles veered off the roads and crashed.

After so many crashes, authorities urged drivers to remain cautious over the next few days. More winter weather was expected to arrive, increasing the likelihood of similar incidents. Traffic police reminded motorists to maintain safe following distance and reduce speeds, pointing out that this can increase reaction times. They also reminded motorists of the new “Move Over law, which requires all drivers to move to the far lane when passing stationary, disabled vehicles and emergency vehicles.

What if Adverse Weather Only Partially Caused My Accident?

Even though snowy conditions may have been a factor in your car accident, this doesn’t mean that others were not to blame. Negligent drivers could have contributed to your accident in ways that are not immediately clear.

An obvious example is the issue raised by New Hampshire police: Not providing enough following distance. If a vehicle was tailgating you on an icy road, they cannot blame the weather if they rear-end you. Similarly, a driver might have contributed to your crash by breaking the speed limit.

Note that all drivers should slow down in snowy or icy conditions – and they may need to drive even slower than the posted speed limit. Remember, the posted speed limit only applies to “ideal” conditions. It is possible to get a speeding ticket for driving under the speed limit on an icy road, and this may constitute a form of negligence in a crash.
